FYI
From an email we received ...
"Last night was by FAR the scariest night I have ever had in my
LIFE! It started as a normal night of playing catch in the house
and doing some trick training and stuff. At around 7:30 it was
walk time so I started to get ready to go...ski pants, mitts,
toque and the rest. As soon as Hydro sees me getting ready he
gets a little crazy and I have just gotten used to it and don’t
really pay attention anymore. WELL Last night he started running
around…I thought it was the normal puppy run until I noticed
that he was pawing at his mouth and running into things. I went
over to see what was going on to find Hydro totally blue in the
mouth. He was choking and could not breathe…His eyes were
bugging out of his head and he was panicking. He had lost
complete control of his bowels there was poop and pee
everywhere. I grabbed him by the collar flipped him on his back
and ripped open his mouth…I could see the tip of something white
so I reached in and pulled it out…only to have a limp dog in my
lap that wasn’t breathing for what seemed like a lifetime but
was only about ten seconds. He took a big huge breath in and
threw up. The colour started coming back to his mouth after
about 5 min or so. He laid there for another 15 min before he
had the energy to get up. It was in that 15 min that I
completely broke down…I lost it. I am still a wreck…I didn’t
sleep at all last night. We made a trip the ER Vet to make sure
everything was ok in there (I was scared I might have scratched
his throat or something). Everything was fine and we got a clean
bill of health. We went home and went for the walk we were
supposed to go on a few hours before. I still can’t talk or even
write about it without getting all teary eyed. I wanted to share
this with all of you because the white thing that was in his
throat was the remains of a compressed raw hide roll. He has
never ever had problems with them before and because he eats a
raw diet he chews everything he eats. We always take away the
smaller pieces that he could possibly swallow. We were always SO
careful with them. I don’t even know where he got this piece
from. We just about lost him at the tender age of 15 months. We
threw out all the remaining rolls in the house last night."
An email I would like to share ...
Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she
died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking
about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a
letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would
recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she
dictated these words:
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is
with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you
let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and
to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her You
will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and
Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return
address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front
of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to
get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped
it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she
asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I
thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our
front porch addressed, "To Meredith" in an unfamiliar hand.
Meredith opened it.
Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, "When a Pet Dies." Taped
to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God
in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of
Abbey & Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven.
Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right
away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like
it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we
don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to
keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this
little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey
by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for
helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful
mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very
much.
By the way, I am wherever there is love.
Love, God
