At
Double LL we believe in raising Labs that
are multi purpose dogs.
We admire Labrador Retrievers for their
versatility and devotion.
They are an intelligent breed and easily
trained. Our dogs are great
companions as well as very capable working
dogs.
We
have owned Labs since we moved to the farm in
1978. As children we were both raised with Labs
as well. This wonderful breed of dogs has been a
big part of our lives. Our dogs are a part of
our family and we love to give them all the
attention they require.
Our dogs all get daily runs where they play,
socialize, learn to use their noses, and
retrieve. In the summer they love to go for
swims in the dugout and in "their" swimming
pool.
Our dogs are raised in a clean and healthy
environment with lots of human contact.
Our Labs are CKC registered.

"Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an
old dog."
- Sydney Jeanne Seward

He is your friend, your partner,
your defender, your dog. You are
his life, his love, his leader. He
will be yours, faithful and true,
to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of
such devotion.

He
who is cruel to animals becomes
hard also in his dealings with
men. We can judge the
heart of a man by his treatment
of animals.
Immanuel Kant

When I am Old...(when?)
Author Unknown
I shall wear Turquoise and soft gray sweatshirts... and a
bandana over my
long, silver hair.....and I shall spend my Social Security
Checks on Sweet Wine
and My Dogs.......and sit in my house on my well-worn chair
and listen to
my dog's breathing.
I will sneak out in the middle of a warm Summer night
and take my Nero
for a run, if my old
bones will allow... and when people come to call, I will
smile
and nod as I walk out and show them my dogs...and talk of
them and about
them... The Ones so
Beloved of the Past and the Ones so Beloved of Today....
I still will work hard cleaning their runs and mopping and
feeding them and
whispering their names in a soft, loving way...
I will wear the gleaming sweat
on my throat, like a jewel, and
I will be an embarrassment to all...
and my Children ...who have
not yet found the peace in being free
to have dogs as your Best Friends...
These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your
footfall...and eagerly
jump to their feet out of a sound sleep, to greet you
.......as if you are a
God.
With warm eyes full of adoring love and
hope that you will stay and hug
their big, strong necks...and kiss their dear sweet
heads...and whisper
to them of
your love and the beautiful pleasure of their very
special
company....
I look in the mirror...and
see I am getting old.... this is the kind of
woman I am...and have always been. Loving dogs is
easy, they are part of me,
accept me for who I am, my dogs appreciate my presence in
their lives...
when I am old this
will be important to me...you will understand when
you are old....& if
you have dogs to love too.

THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER -
AN ALTERNATIVE BREED STANDARD
General Appearance
Not too fussy about appearance. Perfectly happy covered in
mud. Not too fussed about bringing home an aroma from
something rolled in either. Quite prepared to stand and
allow owner to wash dirt off and understands the importance
of getting dry by getting rid of excess water with a good
shake... usually when standing beside owner.
Characteristics
Agile, adaptable and devoted to the cause. Has never lost
its ability to hunt for food and shows all these
characteristics to demonstrate the fact.
Temperament
Very intelligent and kind. Not aggressive or shy. Uses these
qualities when conning food off people or when done
something wrong and due a bollocking.
Skull
Houses a computer-like brain. Solves problems in split
seconds, can switch from one application to another in nano
seconds and has plenty excess capacity for personal
projects.
Eyes
Can see a crumb under a chair at the opposite end of an unit
room.
Ears
More effective than Fylingdales. When used in conjunction
with eyes, nothing is missed. Ears can detect a sweet being
unwrapped in a pocket 3 rooms away, with every door closed.
Can be switched on and off at will.
Nose
Unbelievably effective. No limit to the distance food can be
detected. Can also detect foul smelling objects and
substances in which to roll, up to 3 fields away. Can cause
acute embarrassment when shoved into the crotch of visitors.
Mouth
Pre-programmed to pick things up in its mouth and walk away
with them, it will need reprogramming to get it to carry
them to the handler. New models (called puppies) come fitted
with a temporary set of needles. No chair or table leg is
safe, particularly with ones left on their own .- both
furniture and puppies.
Neck
Strong and powerful enough to drag anything attached to a
collar and lead.
Forequarters
The part seen just before it launches itself to show how
pleased it is to see you.
Body
Very solid construction. Can easily dislodge large objects
which have foolishly been left in its path. Also very
efficient at bringing down standing human objects,
especially when clattering into the back of the legs.
Hindquarters
The part most often seen by the owner who can't be bothered
to train the dog.
Tail
Unfortunately fitted to the Labrador at coffee table height
and with one wag can clear every cup (especially when full)
and anything else not nailed to the table.
Movement
Usually in a straight line, with a purpose, so it tends to
be thinking more about that than where it's going. Advisable
to nail valuables down.
Coat
Has a waterproof undercoat which it needs because it does
not walk around water, whether it be puddle or stream. No
too fussy about the consistency or aroma either.
Colour
Black, chocolate and yellow - depending on your choice, you
may have to re-organise your decor.
Size
Big enough to crash into anything.
Faults
None whatsoever.
